c. Quantification & Quality Assessment

Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer

The Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer is a microfluidics-based platform which is replacing the labour-intensive formaldehyde gel electrophoresis. The bioanalyzer platform is available for the analysis of DNA, RNA, protein and cells. It only takes 1 hour for the entire assay with automated delivering high quality digital data output. The Core Laboratory currently provides RNA quality check service using the Agilent RNA 6000 Pico Total RNA kit (Cat# 5067-1513) which are designed for the analysis of total RNA (eukaryotic and prokaryotic) and mRNA samples. The ratio of RNA fragments (either 18S and 28S for eukaryotic RNA or 16S and 23S for prokaryotic RNA) is calculated and displayed. Moreover, the area under the entire RNA electropherogram gives the concentration of the RNA.

The NanoDrop® ND-2000

The NanoDrop® ND-2000 is a full-spectrum (220-750nm) spectrophotometer. The newly developed sample retention technology enables the measurement of as small as 1ul sample droplet. Simply wiping both the upper and lower pedestals prevents sample carryover in successive measurements for samples varying in concentration by as much as 1000 fold.
