  • Molecular mechanisms driving cardiovascular disease progression
Specialized Research Area

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 20 million people die from cardiovascular disease each year. Data from the China’s Center for Disease Control indicate that cardiovascular disease accounts for nearly 50% of deaths in mainland China, and in Hong Kong about one in six deaths (including stroke) is cardiovascular-related. Kathy Lui’s laboratory focuses on regenerating the damaged cardiovascular system by dissecting disease mechanisms and the crosstalk between cardiovascular and immune cells, especially T cells. Most recently, they uncovered epigenetic pathways of cardiac regeneration mediated by CD4+ regulatory T cells. They employ human pluripotent stem cells as an in vitro platform and use modified RNA and monoclonal antibodies as therapeutic modalities for disease modeling, target validation, and drug screening.

Biography

Kathy Lui obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Philosophy degrees from the Department of Biochemistry, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Supported by the full scholarship Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award, Kathy completed her Ph.D. at Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford, U.K. focusing on stem cell immunology under the supervision of Professor Herman Waldmann. She was honoured with the Senior Scholarship at Lincoln College, Oxford, and the Peter Beaconsfield Prize in Physiological Sciences. Thereafter, Kathy was awarded the Croucher Foundation Fellowship and pursued her postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she investigated cardiovascular regeneration in Professor Kenneth Chien’s lab, and at the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Harvard University, U.S., focusing on stem cell and regeneration in Professor Douglas Melton’s laboratory.

In August 2014, Kathy has established her own research group, studying disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies targeting cardiovascular repair using stem cells as a primary modelling tool. More recently, she focused to study the contributions of immune cells particularly different T cell subsets to cardiovascular disease and repair. Her contributions have been recognized with the Croucher Innovation Award in 2017. She was among the first recipients of China’s NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund in 2019, and was honoured with the title of RGC Research Fellow in 2022. Kathy is also a founding member of the Young Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong in 2018, and continues to play an active role in the Academy for promoting science education in Hong Kong. In 2025, she established the CAS-CUHK Joint Laboratory for Cardiovascular Sciences, funded by the Croucher Foundation, in partnership with Professor Bin Zhou at CAS, Shanghai.
