Specialised Research Area

Kent So specializes in minimally invasive treatments for structural and valvular heart disease. His team’s research spans translational studies, epidemiology, imaging, interventional techniques, and device innovation to improve outcomes.

Key areas include epidemiology of valvular diseases in the Asia-Pacific, novel diagnostics and management for heart failure and valvular disease, device and technique innovation, and use of big data and artificial intelligence. His work emphasizes safety, expanding indications, and strategies for complex interventions. The group seeks biomarkers and investigates pathogenesis of aortic valve and mitral annular calcification to develop therapeutic targets that prevent or slow valve degeneration and improve patient care.

Biography

Kent So graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong with an MBChB degree. He was awarded the prestigious Sir David Todd Scholarship, which supported his advanced fellowship training in structural heart interventions at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, USA.

Currently, Kent serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Director of Structural Heart Interventions at Prince of Wales Hospital.

His achievements include the Cardiovascular Business Forty Under Forty Award (USA, 2025), the Shanghai Technology Advancement Award 2023 (First Class) for device innovation in left atrial appendage occlusion, and the Outstanding Team Award from the Hospital Authority (2023). He is widely recognised as a leader in transcatheter valvular and structural heart interventions in the Asia-Pacific region. He serves as Co-Director of the Asia Pacific Congenital and Structural Heart Intervention Symposium (APCASH) 2025 and CSI-Asia Pacific 2025, and holds leadership roles including Vice President of the Hong Kong Society of Congenital and Structural Heart Disease.

Kent has authored over 100 peer-reviewed in high-impact journals such as JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, JACC Asia, Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, JAMA Cardiology, and European Journal of Heart Failure. He currently serves as Associate Editor of JACC: Case Reports. As a global physician proctor, he has supervised numerous structural heart procedures, including TAVI/TAVR, mitral and tricuspid edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER/T-TEER), transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR), and left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO).

His clinical and research interests focus on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of heart failure and valvular heart disease, device and technique innovation in structural heart interventions, cardiogenic shock and mechanical circulatory support, and the application of big data analysis and artificial intelligence in structural heart disease and heart failure.
