Research Interests
  • Epidemiology, genetics, pathogenesis, and treatment of IBD
  • Role of Gut microbiota in health and disease
  • Faecal microbiota transplantation and microbial therapeutics
Specialised Research Area

Siew Ng’s research interests focus on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She has pioneered IBD research in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, bringing together more than 30 countries and 100 centres to understand the causes and risks of IBD, resulting in a landmark paper published in Nature. Additionally, she has established a longitudinal microbiome cohort of 100K mother-baby for disease prevention. Siew has also transformed microbial signatures into non-invasive diagnostics using novel multi-bacteria technologies for early disease detection related to colorectal cancer, IBD, and autism spectrum disorder. In 2018, she established Asia’s first faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) research centre, which is now the sole provider of FMT services to Hong Kong public hospitals for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infections. Her FMT MOZAIC™ technology has led to a reduction in hospitalisations and prolonged survival.

Biography

Siew Ng is Croucher Professor in Medical Sciences at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics and New Cornerstone Investigator by Tencent Foundation. She is the Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Director of the Microbiota I-Center (MagIC) established under InnoHK, an initiative by the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Siew received her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the St. Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) from Imperial College London. In 2009, Siew joined the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK and became a full professor in 2016. Since 2019, she has co-founded two biotech companies, GenieBiome Limited and MicroSigX Biotech Diagnostic Limited, to transform novel microbiome discoveries into effective diagnostics and therapeutics. She currently serves as President of the Hong Kong Society of Gastroenterology and Advisory Board Member of the Asian Organization of Crohn’s and Colitis (AOCC). She is Associate Editor of Gut.

Siew’s research focuses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She has pioneered IBD research in the Asia-Pacific region, establishing a significant mother-baby longitudinal microbiome cohort and advancing non-invasive diagnostics for early detection of diseases such as colorectal cancer, IBD, and autism spectrum disorder.

Siew has published over 430 papers in leading international journals, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Cell Host & Microbe, and The Lancet. In 2023, ExpertScape recognised her as the top 0.029% world expert in IBD. Additionally, she has been named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate for six consecutive years since 2020 and has been rated as one of the World’s Top 2 % Scientists by Stanford University since 2020.

In recognition of her achievements, Siew was elected to the International Organization for the Study of IBD (IOIBD), an elite group of the top 50 leaders globally. She was elected as a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in Clinical & Veterinary Science in 2024 and as a Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 2025. Notably, she was the first female clinician-scientist to be selected as the New Cornerstone Investigator in the Chinese Mainland by the New Cornerstone Science Foundation in 2023. Her accolades include winning the Bank of China Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize in Life and Health in 2024, as well as The Visionary Women Award in the same year. She was bestowed with the Croucher Professorship in Medical Sciences in 2022 and awarded the Ministry of Education (MoE) Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Natural Science), First-class award in 2020. As a successful clinician-entrepreneur, she was recognised with the Best Innopreneur Award by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries in 2025 and received the Technology Fast Outstanding Female Entrepreneur Award by Deloitte Hong Kong in 2022.

As a world-leading IBD pioneer, Prof. Ng is the Truelove Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2026. She was awarded Joanna and David Sachar International Award and Visiting Professorship (Mount Sinai, New York) and Sir Francis Avery Jones Award and Visiting Professorship (St Mark’s Hospital, London) in 2019, Cleveland Clinic IBD Global Visiting Professorship in 2021, and World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) Distinguished Global Lecture Award, by the Asian Pacific Digestive Week (APDW) in 2023.
