Specialised Research Area

Since 2014, Terry Yip has been devoted to real-world big clinical data research to understand the epidemiology, natural history, assessment, treatment, and clinical outcome prediction of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) through rigorous statistical analyses and big data analytics. He established one of the largest cohorts of patients with CHB who achieved hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance with long-term follow-up (J Hepatol 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023). He is a PI in the VCTE-Prognosis study, an international multicenter cohort study currently involving 16 centers with 18,000 patients with MASLD, focusing on non-invasive tests including vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) and other serum-based biomarkers for long-term clinical outcome predictions (JAMA 2024, J Hepatol 2025, Gut 2025, Clinical and Molecular Hepatology 2025, Hepatology 2025).

Biography

Terry Yip obtained his BSc in Statistics with First Class Honours, MPhil in Risk Management Science, and Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During his Ph.D., he served as a visiting research fellow at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Maryland, Baltimore. He is now an Associate Professor of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK, and the Co-Director (Data Science) of the CUHK Medical Data Analytics Centre. He now has over 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Terry currently serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Hepatology, Statistical Editor of Clinical and Molecular Hepatology, and Editorial Board Member of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, JHEP Reports, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Hepatology Communications. He served as a Baveno VIII panelist on cirrhosis recompensation and is serving as the Communication Lead of the AASLD HBV/HDV Special Interest Group. He has served as a Council Member of The Hong Kong Association for the Study of Liver Diseases since 2021 and is now the Treasurer. He has been a Course Coordinator of the AASLD-APASL Young Investigator Workshop since 2024. He has been an invited speaker for regional and international conferences, including the AASLD, EASL, and APASL annual meetings, Global Hepatitis Summit, and Asian Pacific Digestive Week.
